Mental Health

Mental health poses considerable challenges and opportunities to both practitioners and developers of connected health solutions.  First, is the range and degree of conditions that fall within the mental health domain.  Second, is the impact of mental health on every other aspect of someone’s life, including physical health conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, and social dimensions, like food, employment, housing or involvement in the criminal justice system.

Our work in the mental health domain is limited, mostly as it relates to substance use disorder.  In the spring of 2013, one of our student teams from IUPUI began the effort to conduct background information in support of one or more Mental Health Care Units.  This work led to the start of a Serious Mental Illness Care Unit Analysis, but it is not complete.  One of our objectives through the proVizor Community will be to continue and refine this important work.

Serious Mental Illness Care Unit Background Analysis

Up to two thirds of homeless adults suffer from chronic alcoholism, drug addiction, mental illness or some combination of the three. One fourth of all social security disability payments are for people with mental illness and almost half of Medicaid beneficiaries who have disabilities have a mental illness. In this SMI Care Unit Background Analysis, we take a look at the overall landscape for technology-enabled patient engagement and care collaboration as it relates to mental health.
